Three favorite Real Madrid moments of the decade 2010-2019
Dec 31, 2019
The 2010s was a decade of ups and downs for Real Madrid supporters. It was a decade of brilliant moments and some heartbreaking ones as well. Real Madrid fans saw their team win a historic three-peat in the Champions League. No other team has done it in the Champions League era, and only a handful of other teams has won three in a row in the entire history of the European competition. But this same decade Real Madrid fans saw Barcelona dominate in La Liga with seven titles. They also witnessed the rise of their city rivals Atletico Madrid under Diego Simeone to get their first league title in 18 years. However, with four Champions League trophies and two La Liga titles, Real Madrid did have a good decade to look back at. Now without further a due, here are my three favorite Real Madrid moments from this past decade:
3. Winning 2011/2012 La Liga season under Jose Mourinho
Winning La Liga during an era of one of the best Barcelona team under Pep Guardiola was a treat, but doing so in style was even better. This Real Madrid team was brilliant to watch. The fast-paced counter-attacking style of football that Jose Mourinho implemented with the likes of Ronaldo, Di Maria, and Benzema leading the line was almost perfect. This team was winning games with attractive football. They scored a record-breaking 121 goals while also being the first team to reach 100 points in a single La Liga season.
2. Sergio Ramos 92.48 minute header in UCL final 2013/14 (La Decima)
The moment was set. Atletico was 1-0 up and Real Madrid desperately needed an equalizer. In the dying minutes of injury time, Sergio Ramos made a fantastic run, leaped off the ground and connected with a beautiful header. He had just scored a game-saving goal from a Modric corner kick. This was one of the most iconic moments of this past decade. Real Madrid almost saw their dream of winning La Decima over but Ramos had other ideas. The game went to extra time and Real Madrid won the Champions League for the tenth time in their history after winning the game 1-4. It was an exhilarating moment that will be in Madridistas memories for decades to come.
1. Winning La Liga and Champions League double in 2016/2017 season under Zidane
The league and UCL double win in 2016/17 season is my favorite moment of the decade. This season was the culmination of the greatness of then Real Madrid team under Zidane. The team did go on to win a third straight UCL the following year (fourth in five years), but this was Zidane's Real Madrid at their peak. They were playing brilliant football and winning games however necessary. That included last-minute winners, excellent team goals, impressive individual performances, and more. They won the league this season with 93 points and beat Juventus 4-1 in the UCL final with a dominating performance. This team was a joy to watch. In the 2016/17 season, Real Madrid was the best team in the world.
