Rutgerus Johannes Martinus, or Ruud van Nistelrooy as he is better known, is a thirty one year old attacking player who wears the number seventeen shirt. Van Nistelrooy is a born goal scorer, and will always be found lurking in the oppositions penalty area ready to apply the finishing touch to a move.
This shows when you find out that Ruud van Nistelrooy has been the top goal scorer in three different leagues!
Van Nistelrooy started his senior football career at FC Den Bosch, a second division side in the Netherlands. He played for four years there, making nearly seventy appearances and scoring thirty one goals, twelve of which came in his final season at the club. He was then sold to SC Heerenveen, where he scored thirteen goals in thirty one appearances, but after just one season at the club, he was snapped up by high fliers PSV Eindhoven, where he scored an incredible sixty nine goals in sixty seven appearances in three years at the club before, unsurprisingly, he caught the attention of several top English clubs.
It was Manchester United who bought the Dutch striker in 2001, after a previous attempt at buying him was postponed after a knee injury. Everyone expected great things from Ruud van Nistelrooy, especially after the nineteen million pounds Manchester United paid for him. While at the Old Trafford club, he was an instant hit, and over his five years playing for the Red Devils, van Nistelrooy scored ninety five goals in one hundred appearances, before a training ground dispute between him and Cristiano Ronaldo led to his exit, with Sir Alex Ferguson refusing to play him.
Ruud van Nistelrooy joined Real Madrid in 2006 for an undisclosed fee, which is believed to be around twelve million pounds. In his first season at the Madrid club, van Nistelrooy once again showed he was worth the transfer fee, becoming the top goal scorer in La Liga in his first season, with a whopping twenty five goals in the league alone. In his second season, van Nistelrooy scored a further twenty goals for the club.
At international level, Ruud van Nistelrooy has helped the Dutch to win many games, making sixty four appearances, in which he has scored thirty three goals in his ten year international career. He played extremely well in Euro 2008, even though the Netherlands made an unexpected exit at the hands of Russia in the quarter finals.
