Robson de Souza, or Robinho as he is better known, is a young Brazilian winger with a lot of potential. The twenty four year old has been labeled by many as a player who will soon become either the best, or at least one of the best, players in the world.
Robinho was eighteen when he signed his first professional contract for Brazilian club Santos in 2002. He had spent many years at the youth program at Santos, which was over looked by Brazilian legend Pelé. Overall, he spent three years at the club in the senior side, winning over one hundred and thirty caps, and scoring just under sixty goals in his time there. His remarkable talents attracted the attention of many top clubs, who were offering extremely large amounts for the players, with some reports of fifty million pound bids, but it was Real Madrid who bought the player in 2005.
Although there were rumors for bigger fees, the Brazilian was sold to Real Madrid for around twenty four million euros. Robinho made his debut for the Spanish giants in 2005, and played well in his first season. In the 2006-07 season, however, him and now departed manager Fabio Capello had a row, meaning that Robinho was left on the bench for the majority of the season. So far, in his three years at the Spanish champions, he has made one hundred and thirty one appearances, scoring thirty five goals and helping Real Madrid to win the La Liga in both the 2006-07 season and the 2007-08 season, and there are still many top clubs from all over the world interested in signing the twenty four year old, although he has not expressed any interests to leave the club, and neither have Real Madrid, so it appears that he will stay with the club for the foreseeable future.
Robinho has also taken international football by storm, making his debut in 2003 during a 1-0 loss to Mexico. The twenty four year old played in the 2006 World Cup, where he made four appearances before Brazil’s campaign was disappointingly and unexpectedly brought to an end. In 2007, Robinho played in the Cópa America tournament, where he played extremely well, scoring in all four of Brazil’s group games, winning the Golden Boot for the tournament. Overall, Robinho has made fifty caps for his country and has scored fifteen goals. A remarkable achievement considering he is only in his early twenties.
