Raúl González Blanco is a thirty one year old winger who captains Real Madrid, who is more commonly known as Raúl. He can also play in an attacker’s position, and is considered to be one of the best Spanish players of all time.
At youth level, Raúl played for three different clubs, starting with San Cristóbal de Los Ángeles for one year (1988-89), before moving to Atlético Madrid where he spent two years, before joining Real Madrid, the team where he has become established.
After spending two years in the youth setup, Raúl was called in to action for Real Madrid’s ‘C’ team, but it was senior football none the less, and after an impressive season where he scored thirteen goals in just seven games, the attacking player was called in to action for the main team, where he made his debut in 1995. In the 1995-96 season, Raúl made twenty eight games, scoring nine goals, including one goal against his former club Atlético Madrid, to help Real Madrid claim the La Liga title.
Since his impressive first season, Raúl has made a remarkable amount of appearances for Real Madrid, totaling at over six hundred and fifty appearances in all competitions, in which he has scored just under three hundred goals for the club, and his amazing record has meant that he is the captain of the Spanish club. In the fourteen years he has spent at Real Madrid, Raúl has helped them win an immense amount of silverware, including winning six La Liga titles, three Spanish Super Cups, three Champions League titles, two Intercontinental Cups and one European Super Cup. The remarkable player has also won nearly thirty individual trophies, including being included in FIFA’s ‘Best 100 Players Of All Time’ list.
Raúl’s international career has also been extremely successful, making one hundred and two appearances and scoring forty four goals for his national side, Spain, before announcing his international retirement in 2006 to bring an end to ten glorious years, in which have included him captaining the side for some years. Raúl was not getting the opportunities he wanted under the new Spanish coach Luis Aragonés, hence announcing his retirement, even though there have been numerous calls from his Spanish team mates for the international coach to try and get the country’s top scorer to come out of retirement and play for the under achieving Spanish side.
