Kepler Laveran Lima Ferreira, who is better known as Pepe, is a twenty four year old who was born in Brazil, but plays for Portugal internationally. He has enjoyed playing in many different countries and has made a name for himself as a world class defender, as he plays in the centre back position.
Pepe started his career at youth level playing for local side Corinthians Alagoano, before joining Marítimo. He spent three years at the club, two of which were spent playing for the ‘B’ team, which occasional appearances for the main team. Overall, in the 2001-2004 period, Pepe made thirteen appearances for the Marítimo ‘B’ team, as well as being awarded with sixty three caps for the main team. It was while at Marítimo that Pepe made a name for himself as a brilliant defender, and it wasn’t long before several top clubs were interested in signing him.
It was Portuguese club FC Porto who won the signature of Pepe for a fee of just one million euros, which, considering his impact on their side, was extremely cheap. In 2005, one year after he signed, Pepe started playing magnificently, confirming that he was one of the best defenders in the Portuguese league. The centre back made sixty four appearances for FC Porto, scoring six goals and helping them win the Portuguese League twice, the Portuguese Cup once, the Portuguese Super Cup once, and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup once. After three years at the club, Pepe has once again attracted many top clubs, and he was sold to Real Madrid in 2007.
Pepe cost Real Madrid thirty million euros, and he signed a five year contract with the club. He played excellently for the Madrid team in his first season, playing nineteen games and helping his club to win the La Liga title.
Pepe’s international career has been relatively impressive. Although the centre back was born in Brazil, he plays for Portugal after receiving Portuguese citizenship in 2007. He has only made six appearances for his country, one of which was in Euro 2008 qualifiers against Poland, and the other five came in Euro 2008, where he had a fantastic tournament, playing all five of Portugal’s games and scoring once against Turkey, but, unfortunately for him, Portugal lost by three goals to one in the quarter finals against Germany despite Pepe and his team mates playing incredibly well throughout the whole tournament.
