Gabriel Ivan Heinze is a thirty year old defensive player from Argentina. He can play at centre back, but his preferred position is as a left back, which is where he established himself. Gabriel Heinze has played in five countries, which is probably why he is so well known.
The Argentinean began his senior career in his home country for a virtually unknown club called Newell’s Old Boys, where he played for just one season, making just eight appearances. Even with this lack of playing time, Gabriel Heinze still attracted the attention of many clubs, and in 1997 he moved to Spanish club Real Valladolid. He spent four years at the club, which included being loaned to Portuguese club Sporting CP for one year, before returning to the Spanish side. Overall, he won fifty four caps at Real Valladolid, and scored one goal. He made just five appearances at Sporting CP, though.
By 2001, the talented defender had once again attracted some top clubs, and at the end of the 2000-01 season, Gabriel Heinze moved to French club Paris Saint-Germain, where he spent three years, winning nearly one hundred caps and helped the French side to win the French Cup in 2004.
In 2004, several English clubs became interested in the Argentinean left back, and it was Manchester United who secured a deal with Heinze, in which they paid almost twenty million pounds for the player. He had a disappointing reign at the Old Trafford club, suffering from numerous injuries which kept him out of many games. Gabriel Heinze did, however, make fifty two appearances for the club, and enjoyed winning the League Cup in 2006, and the Premier League in the 2006-07 season. His disappointing reign meant that Sir Alex Ferguson has brought in Patrice Evra to replace him, meaning that Heinze’s only real option was to leave the club.
In 2007, Gabriel Heinze was sold to Real Madrid for a fee of around eight million pounds, and the Argentinean has made twenty appearances for the Spanish club. In his debut season, the left back was played out of position in centre back, but he still made a big impact, helping Real Madrid to claim the 2007-08 La Liga title.
Gabriel Heinze’s international career has included forty three caps since he made his debut in 2003. The left back played in the 2006 World Cup, in which Argentina got through to the quarter finals before being knocked out at the hands of Germany.
