Fabio Cannavaro Biography

Fabio Mamerto Cannavaro is a thirty four year old central defender who wears the number five shirt at Real Madrid. Fabio Cannavaro is from Italy, and has spent most of his football career so far in his home country.

Fabio Cannavaro started playing for Napoli at youth level, where he progressed to the senior team in 1992. In the three years he spent with the adult team, Cannavaro made fifty eight appearances, but due to Napoli having severe money problems, they had to sell the Italian born defender to Parma.

While at Parma, Fabio Cannavaro made a name for himself, attracting a wider audience to view him, and he was attracting some major clubs in his seven years at the Italian high flying club. During these seven years, Cannavaro made over two hundred appearances, scoring four goals. It was in 2002 when Internazionale bought the defender for twenty three million euros. Cannavaro spent two years at the club, making just fifty appearances due to an injury problem in his second season.

In 2004, Juventus bought the defender for a deal which included ten million euros as well as Fabian Carini. While at the Italian club, Cannavaro earned captaincy, making seventy appearances for the club before moving in 2006 following Juventus’ relegation to Serie B due to their alleged part in the Italian match fixing scandal.

Real Madrid gladly took in the defender for a fee of around twenty million euros. Cannavaro has helped the Madrid club to two La Liga titles, and in his two years at the club so far, Fabio Cannavaro has made seventy seven appearances, sixty four of those being in the league. It was in 2006 that Fabio Cannavaro won the FIFA World Player Of The Year Award, making him the first defender to ever win the award.

Fabio Cannavaro has also had an eventful yet successful career at international level, playing for the Under 21s from 1993 to 1996, before stepping up to senior level, where he has made one hundred and sixteen appearances so far. Cannavaro has played in many major tournaments, including two European Championships (2000 and 2004), and has played in three World Cups (1998, 2002 and 2006). In the 2006 World Cup, Cannavaro captained his country, leading them to success as they won the World Cup, with their captain being either the, or one of the, players of the tournament. Cannavaro suffered an injury that put him out of Euro 2008.
